Have you ever noticed? When you placed a hot cup of coffee on a desk and leave it for a while, the cup turns from hot to lukewarm and for times, it turns cold eventually. Have you ever wondered, where did the heat go?
Because the heat in the cup of coffee is replaced with room temperature where the mug and the desk temperature play a part that make the heat disappear.
This principle is similar to the cooling system that ventilate the heat from the object or room temperature and take over with the cool. Apart from that, the cooling system sets stable temperatures at desire.
This article would help an individual to understand more on the principle of cooling system and equipment.
Cooling System Generators
Cooling parts in condensing unit generate the cold by absorbing the heat from the designated area and turn them to the cold by using cooling system. There are five common elements of cooling system.
1. Evaporator
Evaporator is an important part that exchanges the heat from the designated area which works simultaneously with refrigerant. The solution is to boil the refrigerant until it becomes gas which make it able to absorb the heat from surface of the evaporator.
It is widely seen that most of the evaporator is equipped with a fan which either blows or removes the air and assists in refrigeration of the evaporator. The heat in the air being transferred through the evaporator will be removed and changed in to the cool.
2. Compressor
When gas refrigerant is poured from the evaporator, its status is at low pressure and in form of vaporised refrigerant, by absorbing heat from the surrounded air and transfer to the compressor. Function of the compressor is to compress vaporised refrigerant at high density and condense them at a condenser.
3. Condenser
Refrigerant when moving out from the compressor, it has high temperature and high pressure. A condenser is a tool to remove the heat from the refrigerant in order to condense gas refrigerant back to liquid form.
4. Expansion Valve
The last part in cooling system’s main duty is to assist in reducing pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. The refrigerant sent from the condenser is transferred through an expansion valve which reduces pressure of the refrigerant, resulting in readiness to evaporate of the refrigerant at low temperature in the next equipment – evaporator.
5. Refrigerant
Refrigerant is a substance that can change its form from liquid to gas, vice versa, easily. When the refrigerant has changed its form from liquid to vapour, it will bring about the heat from nearby areas to the evaporator and releases the heat once it changes the status into liquid at the condenser.
Quality of the refrigerant is durable and can be used repetitively over time. Some important qualities are cost efficient, heat transferable, inflammable, non-blast, no reaction to lubricant or water, proportion of gas per unit is at minimum and can be condensed effortlessly.
Principles of Cooling System
There are several types of cooling units in the market depends on objectives of users, for example, refrigerators, freezers, walk-in refrigerators, ice manufactures, air conditioners, and cooling system in factories. The common objective is to reduce and maintain temperature at certain degrees.
The primary principle to generate the cool has common characteristics which is making the refrigerant changes its form from liquid to gas, resulting in temperature drop.
The initialisation of the cooling system starts from the heat reduction by using the evaporator. The heat brought by the refrigerant will heat itself until evaporate. In this process, the refrigerant will absorb the heat from areas nearby the evaporator by heat transferring or radiation making the refrigerant at high temperature and low pressure.
The high temperature refrigerant, in gas, will transmit to a compressor which compress and increases the pressure before moving on to a condenser in order to ventilate from the gas refrigerant and convert back into liquid before passing on to an expansion valve. The expansion valve is used to reduce the pressure of the refrigerant so that the refrigerant is evaporated at low temperature at the next equipment, an evaporator, and the process is repeated as a cycle.
Business that use Cooling System
Cooling system plays an important part in keeping raw materials fresh and, in businesses, to expand shelf life as well as to maintain cost of produce. Because the cold from the cooling system prevents the growth of bacteria which is a main cause of decay and increases shelf life.
Food processing
Pasteurisation in milk and ice-cream is to heat the milk at 70 – 80 degrees Celsius. After that, cooling down the milk instantly and storing at 2 – 3 degrees Celsius in order to keep the quality of the milk before sell. Food processing also includes fermentation and mellowing which must be operated at 5 – 15 degrees Celsius.
Food Storage
Freezing fresh produce is to maintain its freshness such as vegetable, fruits, and meats in order to extend shelf life by storing at below freezing point. This way, bacteria stop growing which is the main cause of food decay.
Industrial process
Cooling system is widely used in manufactures such as a chemical industry, a petrochemical, a petrol refinery, and a gas separation plant.
Transportation refrigeration
A mobile refrigeration is to keep qualities of products and freshness during transportation such as walk-in refrigerators in cargo ships or refrigerator trucks that use to transport produces to up countries.
Air condition
Cooling system is widely use in present such as in cars, buildings, and factories. Apart from the refrigeration, it works together with the humidity control system, air filter, air circulation, and air ventilation to produce fresh air.
Conclusion
Process of cooling system differs in method of usage which may be installed in refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, and ventilating fans. Nevertheless, there is one common objective, which is to cool down the temperature in specific areas. The basis and fundamental were described as above where types and sizes may be altered to suit needs and location of the cooling system.
