Importance of Sprinkler System
Sprinkler System not only can prevent life loss but also can protect valuable assets in case of fire. Fire Extinguisher or Sprinkler System will be turned on automatically once the fire start and will reduce the heat instantly and effectively or it will lessen the severity of the situation before the fire will become out of control. From the test, buildings that do not install Sprinkler System, in case of fire, the damage will be many times worsen.
Types of Sprinkler
There are 14 types of sprinkler, in according to NFPA13 Standard, such as ESFR, Extend Coverage Sprinkler, Large Drop Sprinkler, Convensional Sprinkler, Open Sprinkler, and Standard Spray Sprinkler.
Each types of sprinkler are be subdivided but the most well-known type is the Standard Spray Sprinkler, ½”orifice, K=5.6, which will be activated when Glass Bulb sprinkler reach the certain point of temperature where the colour of Glass Bulb will indicate the global standard trigger temperature. In common area, sprinkler usually be installed with Orange or Red Glass Bulb which will be triggered at 135°F (57°C) or 155°F (68°C) respectively. In other areas where temperature could be potentially higher, for example, kitchen where sprinkler should be set at greater starting point at 200°F (93°C). Moreover, sprinkler should be installed in pendent, up-right, or side-wall which will be determined by the system engineer who is an expert in building blue print.
A NFPA 13 sprinkler is suitable for Light Hazard buildings where it could cover up to 200 ft2 without fixture. For Ordinary Hazard and Extra Hazard buildings, designated areas would be reduced to 130 ft2 and 90 200 ft2 respectively and sprinkler must be installed throughout except some zones such as hospital surgery operation, control room which may place with other types of fire extinguisher.
Advantages of having Sprinkler System
- Automatically activate in case of fire
- Prevent hazard in all areas; buildings and factories
- Equipped with siren when install with Alarm Check Valve
- Reduce heat instantly and effectively
- Reduce damage of life and assets
Instruments of Sprinkler System
Sprinkler System will work efficiently when equipped with the following:
- Fire Pump
- Alarm Check Valve
- Floor Control Valve
- Water Flow Detector
It is needed to install Sprinkler System by an engineer expert in building blue print, calculation, and initialization in order to work at its full capability and to prevent life loss and valuable assets. Moreover, the selected model must be certified by global standard such as Underwriter Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM).
Composition of Sprinkler System
Sprinkler works with the following parts:
- Frame
- Deflector
- Blub
- Seal/Cap
Standard Sprinkler System can endure up to 250 psi compression and need to be test to accept no less than 500 psi compression and is certified by an official institute.
It is hope that property owners see the importance of having Sprinkler System and would invest to install the system to prevent life loss and valuable assets.
